What is a hair transplant?

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure that involves moving hair follicles from one part of the body (usually the back or sides of the scalp) to a bald or thinning area on the scalp. The procedure is typically used to treat male pattern baldness or female pattern hair loss.

There are two main methods of hair transplantation: Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). In FUT, a strip of skin with hair follicles is removed from the donor area and then the follicles are transplanted to the recipient area. In FUE, individual hair follicles are extracted from the donor area and then transplanted to the recipient area.

Hair transplants are usually performed under local anesthesia and can take several hours to complete, depending on the size of the transplant. Recovery time varies but most patients can return to work and normal activities within a week to 10 days after the procedure. It can take several months to over a year for the transplanted hair to grow and for the full results to be seen.

The success of the procedure depends on several factors, including the extent of hair loss, the quality and quantity of the donor hair, and the skill and experience of the surgeon performing the transplant.

Studies have shown that hair transplants have a high success rate, with a survival rate of around 90-95% for transplanted hair follicles. However, it's important to note that the success of the procedure also depends on the patient's ability to follow post-operative care instructions and maintain a healthy lifestyle to support hair growth.

It's important to have realistic expectations for the results of a hair transplant, as it may not be able to restore a full head of hair or completely halt the progression of hair loss. Consulting with a qualified and experienced hair transplant surgeon can help you understand the potential outcomes of the procedure and determine if it's the right option for you.
